six Chinese long liners docked in the port of Cape town in the month of July. of the Six, two had serious case of abuse. Chris* 30 years, struggling yet failing to fight back the tears, describing the torture and abuse he and his colleagues endured( Filipino and Indonesians) that went on board the open seas. '' everything seems OK at port, but out in the fishing grounds, we are beaten" explains Chris* the extent and manner to which they were abused was simply horrific. Being chocked for dropping a fishing line, beaten with hooks are are just some of the modes of torture for rookie fisherman making a simple blunder.
out of fear these men, are reluctant to speak or display the evidence of abuse. fear of being never being employed, fear of being further severely beaten and tortured and reality of being killed.
the abuse was executed by the 1st mate ( Chinese) under the watchful eye of the captain ( also Chinese) .as a result. the first mate was fired, with six month deducted salary and the captain only suspended( fancy word for vacation) with six months salary deducted.
The reality is, the captain and first mate will be employed again, the torture Chris* and his friends lived with for 10 months will remain with them for the rest of their lives.
the blatant neglect from immigration and "saftey"inspectors is appalling, and if such indifference toward the migrant fishing crisis continues, so will the abuse.
