Crew on board bulk carrier running out of supplies

November 9, 2017

.

Bulk carrier MV First1  has four days of supplies left

The crew on board the m.v First, supposedly on route to Richards bay from Port Elizabeth South Africa has not been paid their wages for the last six months.  Martin Britz, our chaplain from Port Elizabeth boarded a vessel only to meet with an obvious upset and worrisome crew. One of the crew members said as a result of not being paid their wages, could be forced to sell his car and house.  The chef has also reported that on board supplies are only sufficient for another four days.

Lawyers and The ITF inspector has been contacted to help resolve the issue. The ship is currently lying in anchorage. Crews will hopefully depart home once they reach the port of Richards-bay.

This is an unfortunate yet common situation amoung seafarers, it is a risk many seafarers take, to provide for the families, a sacrifice which Is not only commendable but unappreciated and misunderstood.
