Eight Eastern Cape fishermen are still missing after the vessel was found capsized on the early hours of Saturday morning along the coast of st francis bay. One of the fishermen aboard the chokka fishing vessel was confirmed dead.
Unfortunately an early morning high tide caused the capsized fishing vessel to roll over a few times and despite extensive efforts, the dispatching of a helicopter and dive unit, to reach the hull of the vessel by using cutting tools, no fisherman could be found within the vessel or at sea.
Of the 16 crew, 7 were rescued and six are recovering in a nearby hospital. South African police have since opened an inquest docket. South Africa maritime safety Authority, ( SAMSA) has since launched an investigation regarding the capsized Chokka vessel.
We are all too familiar of the dangers of being a fisherman, our prayers and thoughts go out to the families of the victims.
