What happens when a 1st engineer drinks cleaning liquid by accident?

March 30, 2016

He gets a threat, a hospital bill, and is booted home on his own expense after a day in hospital.

A first engineer (name withheld) accidentally drank cleaning liquid, mistaking it for water, as the cleaning liquid was poured into a used water bottle. Immediately the seafarer feels a burning sensation in his throat and reports feeling extremely disorientated. He then asks the Captain, if he could please be taken to a doctor or hospital, but was told he would have to wait until the next morning (as then the shipping agent would only then be able to see him) and that he should, in the meantime, drink as much water as possible. The very next morning, the poor seafarer gets taken to the doctor, who gets sent to hospital, but not after being bluntly told, by the captain, that if this should be his request, he would be responsible for his own hospital bill and flight back home.  In desperation, (from pain) the seafarer gets sent to hospital.

The ITF and I, had only heard of the situation on Thursday afternoon. Cassiem, along with the AOS, visited him, and promised a return visit the very next day (public holiday). However when the ITF inspector arrived there on Friday afternoon, he was informed that the shipping agent took him out the hospital, and sent him back home, along with his illness, he received no compensation for cancellation of contact ( 2months wages), and money got deducted for his air ticket and hospital bill.

The ITF is on the case, and the company will hopefully pay back all money owed to the seafarer, and rightfully so.
